Bellingham Man Killed in Fatal Traffic Collision on State Route 525 in Island County

ISLAND COUNTY, WA – A single-vehicle accident on State Route 525 near milepost 9 claimed the life of a Bellingham man early Tuesday morning, according to a report from the Washington State Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:51 a.m. on November 26, 2024. A 1995 black Nissan Maxima, traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, left the roadway, struck a fence, and came to rest about 30 feet off the northbound shoulder according to the Washington State Patrol Press Memo.

The driver, identified as Shawn A. Poolman, 40, of Bellingham, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

A passenger, a 40-year-old woman from Clinton, WA, was not injured in the collision. She was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.

Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the accident. It remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved, pending further investigation. The Washington State Patrol stated that next-of-kin notifications were made by Island County Sheriff’s Office and Langley Police Department.

The vehicle, which was totaled in the collision, was removed from the scene by Simmons Towing.
