BELLINGHAM, WA (BellinghamMetroNews.com) – The Bellingham Police Department (BPD) showcased its commitment to road safety with an intensive traffic enforcement operation spanning Friday night into Saturday morning, February 22-23, 2025. Combining the efforts of its Gold Evening and Night Patrol Shifts, the BPD conducted over 70 traffic stops in a brisk nine-hour window, all while juggling the usual stream of 9-1-1 calls.
The operation saw eleven officers, guided by two supervisors, fan out across the city to target unsafe driving behaviors. With remarkable efficiency, the team issued 26 citations and infractions, delivered numerous verbal and written warnings, and took two alleged DUI drivers off the streets. Coordinating this flurry of activity was a single dispatcher at Whatcom County 911, whose stellar work kept the operation running smoothly.
This latest effort adds to an already busy year for BPD’s DUI enforcement. As of February 23, 2025, the department has arrested 70 DUI drivers—a staggering figure considering the year is just 53 days old. That averages out to more than one arrest per day, underscoring the persistent challenge of impaired driving in the community.
The BPD’s traffic safety emphasis reflects a broader mission to protect Bellingham’s residents, blending proactive enforcement with their round-the-clock emergency response duties. Local drivers might want to think twice before rolling through that stop sign—BPD’s night owls are clearly wide awake and on the case.
