BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON – Faber Construction is spearheading the development of the Woburn Street Operations Center, a cutting-edge facility set to enhance the City of Bellingham’s Public Works operations. Located at 1410 Old Woburn Street, this new headquarters will house critical road maintenance equipment, including sanding machines, salt spreaders, and a brine solution production system.

The city’s current facility has become outdated, restricting efficiency and future upgrades. Designed with long-term sustainability in mind, the new Woburn Street Operations Center may integrate solar power and an electric vehicle fleet to support environmentally friendly initiatives.

Despite weather-related setbacks, the project remains on schedule for completion by mid-June. Off-site work, including pedestrian infrastructure enhancements, is slated to begin in late March and continue through April.

The location has been in continuous use for over a century, originally serving as a barn for Bellingham’s first public works equipment. The redevelopment plan includes the construction of three metal buildings:

– Two structures dedicated to housing essential equipment such as dump trucks and trailers.

– A third building designated for bulk material storage, including sand, gravel, salt, and brine for road maintenance.

– Additional space allocated to the Parks Department for potting operations and related activities.

Beyond bolstering Public Works operations, the project includes several off-site enhancements to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility:

– New pedestrian infrastructure along Old Woburn Street, including curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.

– Installation of a new WTA bus stop to enhance public transportation access.

– Safety measures such as rapid flashing beacons at pedestrian crossings to improve traffic safety.

The surrounding neighborhoods may experience increased traffic due to gravel deliveries for a retaining wall under construction. Currently 80% complete, the retaining wall is expected to reduce traffic disruptions once finished. Normal traffic flow should resume until paving begins in May.

Faber Construction has emphasized recycling in this project, repurposing over 300 cubic yards of materials, including concrete and asphalt. This effort not only reduces waste but also minimizes traffic congestion by eliminating unnecessary transportation of materials.

This project’s success is a result of strong collaboration with the City of Bellingham. The city’s dedication to infrastructure improvement and sustainability has facilitated smooth execution for Faber Construction, ensuring positive outcomes for the community.
