WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — July 28, 2025
LUMMI NATION – A Lummi Nation Police Officer was shot early Monday morning while responding to a traffic incident on the 3200 block of North Red River Road. The incident occurred at approximately 12:52 a.m., after a vehicle veered off the road and into a ditch. When the officer approached the driver, the individual opened fire, striking the officer multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot.
Emergency responders transported the 37-year-old officer to the hospital, where they underwent surgery. No official word on the officer’s current condition has been released, but authorities have confirmed in an email to Bellingham Metro News they received immediate medical attention.
“This is a devastating moment for our community,” said Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell “Tank” Tanksley. “A Lummi Nation officer was shot in the line of duty while working to protect and serve. Our thoughts are with the officer and their family as they begin the road to recovery.”
“We stand united in our commitment to support the officer, their loved ones, and the Lummi Nation Police Department,” Sheriff Tanksley added. “Acts of violence against law enforcement threaten the safety of everyone. We ask the public to keep the officer in their thoughts and prayers.”
The Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team (LEMART) is leading the investigation, with updates to be issued by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect has not been located, and the search remains active.
In a statement from the Lummi Indian Business Council (LIBC), Chairman Anthony Hillaire said, “Our hearts are heavy today. One of our own was harmed while serving and protecting our community. In times like this, we must come together as one people — strong, prayerful, and united in care for one another.”
As a precaution, LIBC offices are closed until further notice. The community is being asked to avoid the area while law enforcement continues its work.
A media briefing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today, Monday, July 28, where officials are expected to provide further information about the investigation.
Anyone with information that may assist authorities is urged to contact the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
