WHATCOM COUNTY — Whatcom County is inviting residents to take part in the second Community Engagement Workshop for the Justice Project on Thursday, March 19, at the Lynden City Annex Chamber located at 205 4th Street.

According to an email sent to Bellingham Metro News from Whatcom County, the workshop is designed to give community members an opportunity to help shape the future of local justice facilities, including plans for a new jail and Behavioral Care Center.

County officials say attendees will be able to review and share feedback on the current scenarios under consideration for the proposed facilities. The workshop will also include a closer look at the potential size, overall scope, projected budget, and programming elements tied to the new jail and behavioral health components. Organizers plan to provide an update outlining where the project stands, what progress has been made so far, and what key decisions are coming next.

Residents will also have the opportunity to offer public comment directly to elected officials regarding upcoming decision points tied to the project. County leaders have said community input plays an important role in determining how the facilities are structured and how services are delivered.

Participating agencies include the Whatcom County Executive’s Office and facilities team, Whatcom County Health and Community Services, the Incarceration Prevention and Reduction Task Force, and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. The Justice Project has been an ongoing topic of discussion in recent years as county officials work to address aging infrastructure, public safety needs, and behavioral health resources.

County representatives are encouraging residents from across Whatcom County to attend, learn more about the proposals, and share their perspectives as the planning process continues.
