BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON. – The Whatcom Family YMCA is proud to announce that Campbell Phillips, a member of its Youth and Government (YAG) delegation, has been elected Youth Governor for Washington State’s 78th Youth Legislature. Campbell’s election is a significant milestone, marking him as the second Youth Governor from the Whatcom delegation in the past five years. This achievement highlights the YMCA’s commitment to fostering strong, capable youth leaders and demonstrates the delegation’s impact on the statewide program.
In his new role, Campbell will be responsible for leading the student-run legislative process for the year. His primary objectives as Youth Governor include creating inclusive spaces for youth to engage in meaningful discussions, raising public awareness of the YAG program, and introducing ranked-choice voting to enhance the democratic process within the organization. Campbell’s leadership will be key in guiding the legislative efforts of young people across Washington State.
“I’m honored to serve the Washington Youth Legislature and excited to work with young people across the state. This position is a unique opportunity to highlight the impact that youth can have on our society,” said Campbell. “I hope to create spaces where we can lead important discussions and inspire others to take part in shaping the future.”
As Youth Governor, Campbell will also oversee the planning of the Governor’s Ball, a key event in the annual session held in Olympia each May. The ball is a highly anticipated tradition for delegates statewide, offering a chance to celebrate the work accomplished during the year.
Commitment to Leadership and Civic Engagement
Christian Moulaison, YAG Advisor, praised Campbell’s leadership and the dedication he has shown to the program, saying, “Campbell’s election as Youth Governor is a testament to his exceptional leadership and commitment to the YAG program. Despite being part of a smaller delegation, his determination and skill set allowed him to rise to the top. His ability to inspire and lead by example will have a lasting impact not only on our delegation but on the entire state program.”
Campbell’s election reinforces the strength of the YMCA’s Youth and Government program and its ability to develop young leaders. His success also aligns with the YMCA’s core mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
