HAVANA, CUBA — Four people are dead and six others injured following a confrontation between Cuba’s border guard troops and a U.S.-registered speedboat off the coast of Cuba on Wednesday morning, February 25, 2026, according to a statement released by Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior.

Cuban officials say the incident began after authorities detected what they described as a “violating” speedboat inside Cuban territorial waters. The vessel, reportedly registered in the state of Florida under registration number FL7726SH, was located near Cayo Falcones, in the municipality of Corralillo, Villa Clara province, approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel.

According to the official account provided by the Cuban government, a surface unit from the Border Guard Troops of the Ministry of the Interior approached the speedboat for identification. Cuban authorities claim that as officers moved in to make contact, individuals aboard the speedboat allegedly opened fire on Cuban personnel, injuring the commander of the Cuban vessel.

Cuban officials state that an exchange of gunfire followed. As of the time of their report, four people aboard the foreign vessel were killed and six others were injured. The injured individuals were transported for medical treatment, according to the statement.

Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior described those aboard the speedboat as “aggressors” and said investigations remain ongoing to clarify the full circumstances surrounding the encounter. The ministry also reiterated that Cuba will continue to enforce its maritime boundaries and protect its territorial waters.

The U.S. government has not yet formally responded to the incident. There has been no immediate public statement from the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, or any other federal agency as of Wednesday afternoon. It remains unclear who the individuals aboard the speedboat were, their nationalities, or the purpose of their voyage.

This remains a developing international incident with potential diplomatic implications. Additional details are expected as both Cuban officials and, potentially, U.S. authorities provide further information.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
