JERUSALEM — The U.S. Department of State has authorized the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members assigned to Mission Israel due to ongoing security concerns, according to a public notice issued by the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem on February 27, 2026.
The embassy stated that the decision was made in response to recent security incidents and evolving conditions in the region. Officials noted that additional travel restrictions could be put in place without advance notice, potentially limiting or prohibiting U.S. government employees and their families from traveling to certain areas of Israel, including parts of Jerusalem’s Old City and the West Bank.
In its advisory, the embassy indicated that individuals who are considering departure may wish to do so while commercial flights remain available. The notice comes as regional tensions continue to draw international attention and as diplomatic missions review security protocols.
Multiple national outlets, including The New York Times, have reported that the U.S. ambassador to Israel informed embassy staff in an internal communication that those wishing to leave should consider doing so promptly. According to those reports, the message followed meetings and calls held overnight with State Department officials, with safety described as the top priority. The communication also referenced uncertainty surrounding the availability of outbound flights in the coming days.
At this time, the authorization applies specifically to non-essential personnel and eligible family members. There has been no announcement indicating a full evacuation or closure of the embassy. The situation remains fluid, and further guidance could be issued depending on developments on the ground.
The U.S. government has not yet formally responded to the incident beyond the embassy’s security notice. No official statement has been issued by the White House or the State Department’s main office addressing the broader implications of the authorized departure.
The U.S. Embassy has encouraged Americans in the region to closely monitor official travel advisories and remain aware of local conditions. Travelers are urged to assess their plans carefully and stay informed through official government channels.
