Bellingham Rallies for Don: Community helps Bartender’s Recovery from Christmas Eve Accident

BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON – On Christmas Eve, a tragedy happened to one of Bellingham’s own, Don, while he was riding his scooter on Holly Street was Struck by an uninsured pick-up truck, Don suffered severe injuries, including a shattered leg and a torn bicep, which have drastically altered his life.


Don is not just a local; he’s an integral part of the community, known for his hiking guidebooks, which include a trilogy on the Pacific Northwest and his latest, “Day Hikes in Washington State.”

Before becoming the friendly face at CHeBA HUT as a bartender, Don learned his skills at The Culinary Institute of America, showcasing his culinary talents. His love for the outdoors, captured through photography and adventures in mountain biking and scooter riding, has made him a beloved figure.


The accident has left Don facing a long recovery, with costs for emergency care, surgeries, home adaptations for mobility, physical therapy, and lost wages piling up without the support of insurance from the driver involved.


Community Response
In response, friends, family, and the Bellingham community have banded together to support Don. A fundraising campaign has been launched with the goal to raise $25,000 to help alleviate the financial strain of his recovery. Shandy, a close friend, along with Don’s workplace, CHeBA HUT, are leading the charge.
