LUMMI NATION, Wash. — A Lummi Nation Police Officer who was seriously injured in a shooting while on duty last summer has officially returned to work, according to a statement shared this week by the Lummi Nation Police Department.
In a Facebook post published Wednesday, the department welcomed Officer Andrew Coquillette back to the road following what officials described as a long recovery process after the July 2025 incident that left him seriously wounded in the line of duty.
“After a long road to recovery following the incident last July, we are beyond grateful to have him back in uniform and serving our community once again,” the department wrote in the public statement. The post also thanked community members who supported the officer and his family throughout the recovery period.
Bellingham Metro News independently confirmed through community sources familiar with the incident that Officer Coquillette was the officer injured during the July shooting that drew a major law enforcement response and widespread concern across the region at the time.
The incident became one of the most heavily discussed public safety events in Whatcom County last year, with many residents continuing to follow updates surrounding the officer’s condition and recovery in the months afterward.
The department’s latest update appears to mark a significant milestone in that recovery, showing the officer back in uniform and returning to active service nearly a year after the shooting.
The Lummi Nation Police Department did not release additional details regarding Officer Coquillette’s current assignment status or when exactly he resumed patrol duties.
The original incident remains one of several high-profile cases involving violence against law enforcement officers in the region over the past year. Community members flooded the department’s social media comments Tuesday with messages of support, welcoming the officer back and thanking him for returning to service.
Bellingham Metro News will continue following any additional updates related to the case and Officer Coquillette’s return to duty.
