BELLINGHAM, Wash. — WECU, Industrial Credit Union, North Coast Credit Union, WestEdge Credit Union and several other financial cooperatives are joining forces for a series of volunteer projects, fundraising events and community programs across Whatcom and Skagit counties this month.
WECU is organizing the effort alongside Industrial Credit Union, North Coast Credit Union, Northwest Plus Credit Union, Global Credit Union, Harborstone Credit Union and WestEdge Credit Union. The activities run from Sept. 30 through Oct. 15 in connection with International Credit Union Day.
The effort began Sept. 30 with a Bite of Reality financial simulation program at Blaine High School. On Oct. 3, participating credit unions volunteered with the Tri-Parish Food Bank in Burlington.
Several more projects are planned over the next two weeks. Credit union employees will volunteer with the Bellingham Food Bank on Oct. 8 before heading south Oct. 10 for the Pass Lake Reforestation Project at Deception Pass State Park.
A blood drive with Bloodworks Northwest is scheduled for Oct. 14 at WECU’s administrative office. The series wraps up Oct. 15 with volunteers working at Helping Hands Food Bank in Sedro-Woolley and a fundraising pint night for credit union professionals at Stemma Brewery. Proceeds from the brewery event will benefit Communities in Schools of Whatcom-Skagit.
“Credit unions have always been about people helping people, and this is a great example of what that looks like when we work together,” WECU Director of Advocacy Cherish Flint said in the announcement.
Flint said International Credit Union Day gives credit unions an opportunity to celebrate the cooperative movement while also putting those values into action in the communities they serve.
International Credit Union Day is observed annually by credit unions around the world and recognizes the cooperative movement and the role credit unions play in serving their members and communities.
WECU is headquartered in Bellingham and was founded in 1936 as Bellingham Teacher’s Credit Union. The organization now reports more than 172,000 members and more than $3.4 billion in assets.
