BELLINGHAM, WA — Traffic on Interstate 5 northbound near Lake Samish is currently at a standstill as emergency crews respond to a serious crash that has shut down all lanes.
It is also worth noting that this is the general area of where the recent major landslides had occurred.
The incident was reported shortly after 11:00 a.m. near milepost 247, just north of Samish Way. Dispatch logs show Whatcom County Fire and EMS units, along with Washington State Patrol, were sent to what has been classified as an expanded traffic collision. Multiple aid units, engines, and medical personnel are either on scene or continuing to arrive.
Real-time traffic alerts indicate that all northbound lanes are blocked at this time. Traffic cameras in the area show a growing backup with vehicles stopped along the highway and no movement getting through the scene.
People in the area report a significant emergency response, and a helicopter has been seen arriving, suggesting serious injuries may be involved. Video received by Bellingham Metro News shows drivers stuck in place as responders work further ahead on the roadway.
At this time, officials have not released details on injuries or how many vehicles are involved. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
