BELLINGHAM, WA – On Sunday, Jan. 19, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Corrections deputies responded to a medical emergency on the first floor of the Whatcom County Jail. An inmate had attempted to h-ng themselves using a bedsheet while alone in their cell.
Deputies conducting a routine walkthrough discovered the inmate and immediately performed CPR until medical assistance arrived. The inmate was transported to PeaceHealth St.
Joseph Medical Center.”Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time,” said Sheriff Donnell Tanksley. “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and struggles faced by those in our care. We bear that in mind and will continue to prioritize the safety, well-being, and support of all those in our custody.” The Bellingham Police Department has been requested to conduct an independent investigation.
The inmates condition or identity has not been publicly disclosed to the press, and an independent investigation is currently underway.
