Whatcom County teen racer McKenna Morgan is competing for national recognition after being named one of 25 finalists for Hoosier Racing Tire’s 2027 Hoosier Hero program, according to an announcement from Morgan Motorsports.
The 16-year-old, who began racing in dirt go-karts, now has a chance to represent Deming Speedway and the Pacific Northwest racing community. The program recognizes competitors for their accomplishments and contributions to racing, both on and off the track.
Public voting runs through September 6, closing at 8 p.m. Pacific time. The final group of 12 Hoosier Heroes will be announced at the Performance Racing Industry Show in Indianapolis.
McKenna Morgan began racing at age 4 before moving into quarter midgets at Skagit Speedway’s quarter-midget track. At Deming Speedway, she worked her way through Junior Sprints and the 600 Restricted division. She now competes in the 600cc A-Class micro sprint division.
Her team reports that she has earned multiple championships and race wins, along with six Sportsman of the Year awards at Deming Speedway.
Much of her work happens away from the driver’s seat. Morgan handles nearly all of her car’s maintenance, including work on its fuel injection system, suspension, setup and repairs, according to the release. On nights when she is not racing, she also helps another team in the pits at Skagit Speedway.
Morgan began taking college courses at 15 while continuing her high school classes. A straight-A student, she plans to pursue motorsports engineering at Purdue University. She has also participated in FFA Agricultural Mechanics, earning a place on a state-level team as its only female member.
“Deming Speedway is home, and the Pacific Northwest racing community is a huge part of who I am,” Morgan said in the release.
Her team says she hopes to become the first Hoosier Hero representing the Pacific Northwest dirt-track racing community.
