Sahara Pizza is the new kid on the block in Whatcom County. Lynden has the newest location that opened this past week in Bender Plaza. The northeast corner of Lynden struggles to keep decent food options in place very long, but this Lydenite believes Sahara Pizza has a great opportunity and everything in place to be a longtime fixture in Lynden.
As soon as we walked in to the new, modern, yet simple pizzeria we were welcomed in by a friendly face and cheerful attitude. We arrived about 1 hour before close on a Sunday night and we were the only patrons. The front counter staff treated us like the place was full and not winding down after a long day. The building was bright and spacious and we felt comfortable from the very beginning.
Sahara Pizza has been around for about 24 years and has locations throughout the Northwest. You can tell right away that they know what they’re doing. The menu is varying and expansive yet not overwhelming. Everything from pizza, salad, pastas, and grinders (sandwiches). We kept it simple on our first visit and ordered the Chicken, Bacon, Ranch pizza, a Firebird pizza, and a small personal pan sized Pepperoni. We added a side caesar as well to finish it off.
Everything was what you want out of a pizza; evenly cooked, flavorful, warm, and filling. My wife’s chicken, bacon, and ranch pizza was a perfect mix of flavors. None of them overwhelmed the other and you could taste each ingredient as you should. The ranch is their own recipe and complemented the meats and cheeses perfectly. My firebird pizza was just spicy enough to let you know it was there, but not so overpowering that you regretted ordering it at 9:00pm. The small pepperoni was as it should be. Simple yet flavorful.
My only critique was the caesar salad. Mainly my own preference kicking in here as my family enjoyed it well enough. I like a creamier strong caesar dressing, but this one was a thinner sauce that didn’t pack that caesar punch that I prefer. The salad was fresh and chilled and definitely not something to avoid at all.
I will definitely be back as there are a lot of options I want to experience such as the Philly Cheesesteak and some of the pastas are calling my name. The restaurant is open and spacious for a pizza joint as it is occupying the old Nuthouse Grill location. I truly hope that they ingratiate themselves in the local food scene not only for their future success but for the future success of Bender Plaza being able to provide a great option to the other side of Lynden.
