A maintenance closure between Samish Way and Iowa Street is causing significant congestion, with traffic backed up beyond Fairhaven.
Drivers should avoid northbound Interstate 5 through Bellingham if possible as a lane closure causes a major traffic backup Saturday afternoon.
Traffic was backed up beyond the Fairhaven area shortly after 2:30 p.m., with heavy congestion continuing through Samish Way toward Iowa Street. Traffic cameras showed vehicles moving slowly through the area while crews worked behind traffic cones near Iowa Street.
Northbound I-5 Backup Extends Beyond Fairhaven
According to WSDOT’s real-time travel information, maintenance is affecting northbound I-5 between Samish Way at milepost 252 and Iowa Street at milepost 254.
Drivers traveling north through Bellingham should use an alternate route if possible or prepare for significant delays. Motorists approaching the backup should slow down, leave additional space between vehicles and remain alert for crews working near the roadway.
