Have you ever wanted a glimpse into a neighboring community?
Growing up in Whatcom County, many of us heard different perspectives about other schools and the people who lived in those areas. The environments we grow up in can influence how we see the world and understand others.
Over the weekend, I watched a film set in Lynden that explores the 2020 protest and events that followed in 2021.
The film follows a young woman who grew up in the Lynden community and shares her experiences as a person of color. It also highlights how local churches and community members responded during that time, including differing approaches to what they believed would contribute to public safety.
Filmmakers Bryan Tucker and Chris Barron present perspectives from multiple individuals to document how the day unfolded.
Asha reflects on her personal experiences growing up in Lynden and how those experiences shaped her. The film does not attempt to define the community as a whole but instead examines how events and differing viewpoints can impact individuals within a town.
If you’re interested in watching the film, you can find viewing options on their website. The documentary is currently available to watch for free on YouTube and the Roku Channel.
