BELLINGHAM — New details have been released following a significant police presence outside the Safeway on East Sunset Drive in Bellingham on April 23.
According to information provided to Bellingham Metro News by the Bellingham Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:57 p.m. to a report of shots fired at a business in the 1200 block of E. Sunset Drive. The call prompted a large response as officers worked to assess the situation and secure the area.
Bellingham Metro News observed the response taking place outside the Safeway location. However, it has not been independently confirmed whether the incident occurred inside the Safeway itself or at another business within the same complex, as that detail was not specified in the information provided by police.
When officers arrived, they located the individual connected to the incident, who was described as cooperative with investigators. Police determined that the firearm discharged after falling, rather than being intentionally fired.
Investigators examined the scene and identified the location where the discharge occurred. During the investigation, officers also noted a defect in the flooring in the area. Authorities say further interviews and follow-up work indicated there may have been a malfunction involving the individual’s holster. The firearm owner had reportedly been aware of the issue and was attempting to address it prior to the incident.
Police said the firearm fell and discharged upon impact. One person sustained a minor scratch, believed to have been caused by a fragment. No medical treatment was required.
While the incident appears to have been accidental, officials confirmed that the case has been forwarded for prosecutorial review, which is standard procedure in situations involving firearm discharges.
Authorities also stated that the individual involved is legally permitted to carry a firearm and was in possession of a valid concealed pistol license at the time.
The incident drew attention from the public due to the visible police response in a busy commercial area, but officials say there is no indication of an ongoing threat related to this event.
