Downtown Bellingham near N State Street
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Red Star Taco Bar will permanently close its downtown Bellingham location later this month, ending a nearly two-year run on North State Street.
The restaurant announced Friday that its final day at 1327 N. State St. will be Sept. 25.
Cascadia Daily News was the first local news outlet to report the closure Friday afternoon.
Red Star said several factors contributed to the decision and that there was not one single reason behind the closure. The restaurant is expected to continue operating through Sept. 25.
The closure does not mean the entire restaurant space is shutting down. Sweet Bay Cafe, which operates from the same State Street building, will remain open and continue serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and coffee.
Sweet Bay and Red Star have shared the property since both businesses opened in October 2024. The two concepts operate from the same building, with Sweet Bay primarily serving customers during the morning and daytime hours and Red Star operating later in the day.
Red Star Taco Bar opened its Bellingham location on Oct. 15, 2024, expanding the Red Star concept to Bellingham alongside its Seattle and Tacoma locations. The Bellingham restaurant became known for its taco menu, tequila selection and late-night atmosphere.
The building at 1327 N. State St. has gone through several restaurant changes in recent years.
Before Red Star moved in, the space was occupied by Jack’s BBQ. Jack’s opened its Bellingham location in April 2022 before closing in December 2023, giving the Seattle-based barbecue restaurant a relatively short run in Bellingham.
Red Star and Sweet Bay later took over the State Street property, with Red Star ultimately operating in downtown Bellingham for nearly two years.
Although Red Star is preparing to close, the owners indicated that Sweet Bay will continue operating from the building and told customers to stay tuned for future developments.
Red Star Taco Bar’s final day in Bellingham is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 25.
