Planet Fitness Coming Soon | BMN Photo
BELLINGHAM, WA — A new billboard spotted along West Bakerview Road is sparking curiosity this week, indicating that Planet Fitness is planning to open a location somewhere in Bellingham.
The sign, which reads “coming soon,” is positioned near Barnes & Noble and has quickly caught the attention of passing drivers and residents. While its placement may suggest activity in that immediate area, there are currently no confirmed permits or project filings in the City of Bellingham’s eTRAKiT system tying a Planet Fitness development to that specific site or surrounding parcels, or at least one that BMN hasn’t been able to yet.
At this point, the exact location of the future gym remains unknown. The billboard confirms plans for a Bellingham presence, but it does not indicate where within the city the business ultimately intends to open. With Bellingham continuing to grow and attract national retailers, several commercial areas could potentially be in consideration.
Nearby, there has been past exploratory redevelopment activity at the Burlington Coat Factory site, where a pre-application considered adding new tenants, including potential fitness-related uses. However, that proposal has since been closed, and new documents have not yet come to our attention connected to that site, and there is no confirmed connection to Planet Fitness at this time.
Retail vacancies across Bellingham leave several possible landing spots for Planet Fitness, especially in larger spaces along Meridian, Sunset Square, and Birchwood area.
Other possibilities include the old retails locations at Northwest Avenue near Birchwood, but at this point, no specific site has been confirmed and the final location could be anywhere in the city.
For now, the billboard serves as the first visible indication that the company is looking to enter the Bellingham market, though key details such as the final site and timeline have not yet been publicly confirmed.
