BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Planet Fitness appears to have listed the wrong address for its future Bellingham gym, and a newly located City of Bellingham permit now points to a much larger space at Sunset Square.
City permit BLD2026-0678 identifies the project as a tenant improvement for a new Planet Fitness at 1125 E. Sunset Drive, Suite 125, the former JOANN Fabric and Crafts location.
That is different from the address Planet Fitness had been showing on its own website.
The company’s official Bellingham listing had been previously advertising 1225 E. Sunset Drive, Suite 125, along with a pre-grand opening sale. That address points to a much smaller storefront near the former Rite Aid, in the area associated with European Wax Center and the former Vision Plus location.
The similar addresses caused confusion when Bellingham Metro News and other local news outlets reported on the Sunset Square location in August.
At the time, BMN noted that the 1225 storefront appeared unusually small for a full Planet Fitness gym and questioned whether the company planned to combine multiple suites or whether the address listed online was incomplete or incorrect.
The new permit appears to answer that question.
The project description reads “TI FOR NEW PLANET FITNESS – BLI SUNSET SQUARE LLC.” Planet Fitness is also listed as the business or tenant. The permit was applied for Sept. 3 and remains under review.
Separate plumbing and mechanical permits connected to the project are also shown as under review.
The 1125 address is the former JOANN location, giving Planet Fitness access to a substantially larger storefront than the one suggested by the company’s online directory.
Simply, it appears 1125 and 1225 were mixed up, while both listings carried Suite 125.
Planet Fitness has not publicly explained the address discrepancy, and its website was still showing the 1225 address when BMN checked. The city permit, however, provides the strongest confirmation so far of where the gym is actually planned.

Bellingham Metro News first reported Planet Fitness’ planned expansion into Bellingham on April 21, after a “coming soon” billboard appeared along West Bakerview Road. At the time, the company had not announced a location, although Sunset Square was among the possible sites BMN examined because of its larger vacant retail spaces.
Planet Fitness later added Bellingham to its official directory, confirming Sunset Square but creating new questions because of the small suite listed online.
The newly discovered permit now makes the project much clearer.
If approved and completed as filed, Bellingham residents can expect a considerably larger Planet Fitness location inside the former JOANN space rather than the smaller storefront originally shown on the company’s website.
No opening date has been announced. The building permit remains under review.
